Black Friday: Are Your Business Purchases Tax Deductible?
Black Friday is almost here, and many business owners are looking for deals on equipment, software, and office supplies. One question we often help our bookkeeping clients understand is whether these purchases are actually tax deductible.
The short answer is no. Not everything you buy for your business qualifies for a tax deduction.
Here are four things to keep in mind before shopping:
1. Know what qualifies as a business expense.
Generally, the IRS allows deductions for expenses that are ordinary and necessary for your business. This may include computers, office supplies, software subscriptions, and equipment used for work.
2. Separate business and personal purchases.
If you buy a $1,000 laptop and use it 70% for business, generally only the $700 business portion may qualify for a deduction, subject to applicable tax rules.
3. Understand how tax deductions work.
A $2,000 tax deduction doesn't mean you get $2,000 back. It generally reduces your taxable income, not your tax bill dollar for dollar. Some equipment purchases may also have special deduction rules.
4. Keep your receipts and records organized.
Save your receipts, separate personal and business expenses, and record purchases correctly in your bookkeeping software. This makes tax preparation much easier.
Remember, just because something is on sale doesn't mean your business needs it.
Black Friday can be a great opportunity to save money, but smart purchases and accurate bookkeeping are what really help your business stay financially healthy.
